Circumcision for Newborn Baby Boys – What Parents Need to Know

Approximately 25%–30% of Australian males are circumcised. This has increased from a low of 13% in 2010. Many circumcisions are performed for religious or cultural practices, but also when the father had to have a medically indicated circumcision at an older age.

Why should I consider circumcision for my baby boy?

Circumcision is one of the most common procedures performed around the world, with many being performed not for religious or cultural reasons. Up to 10% of adult males will need circumcision throughout their lives for medical complications of the penis. It is important to consider all issues before deciding if circumcision is right for your son. Learn more about our newborn circumcision services in Melbourne.

What is the ideal age for a newborn circumcision?

The baby should be no older than 3 weeks of age. The preference is within the second week following birth. After 3 weeks of age, the boy’s awareness and potential for distress increases.

I believe that it may be better to delay the procedure until after 1 year, where a spinal or general anaesthetic may be administered.

What does the circumcision procedure involve?

The procedure takes approximately 2–4 minutes to perform. Neonatal male circumcision is performed with one or more types of local anaesthetic administered prior to the procedure.

What techniques are used to circumcise a baby boy?

The two common methods in Australia are the Plastibell and the Gomco Clamp. The Plastibell is more common and offers advantages in safety, reliability, and aftercare.

Will my baby be in pain during circumcision?

No procedure can be performed without some degree of discomfort, even during the administration of local anaesthetic. The time in which your son would feel discomfort is normally limited to the length of the procedure. Once the Plastibell is in place, most parents do not notice distress in their boy in the following hours or days.

What are the possible complications of a newborn circumcision?

Complications may include very small cases of bleeding at the time of the procedure. If you have any concerns, please contact our Melbourne rooms to discuss further. You may also want to read about tongue-tie assessment and the newborn services we offer.
