Mental Health

Life comes with many different challenges and mental health and mental wellness are central to our overall experience. Many people with pre-existing mental health issues will have concerns over their journey through fertility, pregnancy, childbirth and becoming and new parent.

We appreciate that these needs are an important area that should be listened to, and heard and where need be, further support and services may be required.

What support is available to me during my pregnancy?

Existing therapies may need review and common early pregnancy symptoms often need more extensive assistance. Your medical history will be discussed in detail with Guy at your initial visits and together you will work through the best course of initial management which may include referral to a mental health specialist if not already engaged.

Who do I talk to if I am mentally struggling after having my baby?

Difficult situations such as miscarriage, and the anticipation of childbirth are examples of where mental health can be most challenged. Likewise, post-natal depression and the much less common postnatal psychosis need to be anticipated where the risk of these are higher. It is highly recommended that you talk to your support people and Guy or ring our rooms to speak with our Private Practice Midwives and tell them know how you are feeling.

Where can I find mental health support post-delivery?

St Vincent’s Private Hospital has its own Perinatal Emotional Well-being Specialist Midwife and Counsellor. Guy has multiple options available for supportive psychologists and psychiatrists if these are required. Continuity of care through a private specialist and a hospital that is very supportive in this area can go a long way to making your experience the best it can be.
